Game of the Day - Shock Troopers - 2nd Squad

Shock Troopers - 2nd Squad is the less-known, less-popular follow-up to the original Shock Troopers.  It is a Military Omni Shooter with better weapons and better graphics than its predecessor.

ST2 has 3 buttons to go along with the joystick.  Button 1 fires your weapon in any direction you are facing or moving.  However,  if you hold it down, it locks the direction you are firing - leaving you free to move while still blasting the same way.  Button 2 is your grenade/bomb and Button 3 is for jumping - including jumping into the MANY vehicles strewn throughout the game.  Additional button uses come into play when you are in the vehicle.  Button 1 also becomes a charged shot (hold it down for more power) and Buttons 1 & 2 together produce a more powerful super shot.  Finally, Button 3 enables you to bail out of the vehicle.

Blasting everything in sight with great weaponage is the fun of ST2.  The graphics are cartoony and remind me in spirit of a rougher version of Metal Slug.  The weapons come in many forms as do the grenades.  You also can power-up all the weapons by collecting 3 floating "P"s.  Do this and you are powered-up to the next level of fire.  There are dudes fighting you from everywhere; ground troops, aircraft, parachuters and vehicles of all types are on your ass from the word go.  And there are MANY vehicles all around for you to use as it is a main part of the gameplay.
My only real criticism of the game is that all the nice graphics and chaotic gameplay result in the occasional screen/graphics slow-down of the game.  But it's a small price to pay for lots of fun.

I mentioned this is a less popular game than the original Shock Troopers.  Though the games are very similar (and only a year apart), here are a few of the differences...

ST2 has better graphics than ST.
ST2 has a jump, ST has an escape roll.
ST2 has more enemies.
ST2 has vehicles, ST does not.
ST has more characters to choose to play than ST2.
In ST you can play as a team and switch players at any time, not ST2 (this bit of info is listed backwards on KLOV).

There you have it, go blast some enemy comrades and get some medals.

  1. Just wanted to say you have a great blog. Keep up the good work. Your GotD has shown me a few games I didn't even know existed in MAME.

  2. I have this game but worst of all it doesn't work on my M.A.M.E. I downloaded a freaking Neo Geos Roms and Bios require and it still doesn't work. I still stays I'm missing Neo Geo Bios and Roms. What the hell what do I have to do to make it work god damnit!
