Bucky O'Hare is based on a cartoon - and it looks that way. It is a side-scrolling (and more!!!) beat-'em-up/platformer/shmup that tries to be a little bit of everything and usually succeeds.
You start by choosing among several goofy looking characters. They all have different weapons and attacks but similar looking bombs/super attack. In fact, there are three buttons to use along with the joystick: Shoot, Jump & Bomb. But there is much, much more in terms of controls. Pushing the shoot & jump button together does a different type of attack. Pushing the shoot button in mid-jump is a diff attack. Pushing the shoot & jump together in mid-jump is a diff attack. There are also grabs and throws you can do. Additionally, when you are held, you can wiggle the joystick and push the shoot button to get free. All of this adds up to a ton of variety and fun in controlling your character. Unlike most beat-em-ups, there are many diff way to attack here.
There is just as much variety in the levels as there is in the control scheme. The first level is a traditional side-scrolling shoot/beat-em-up. Soon though, you will be sliding down a level at a 45 degree angle while shooting the enemy. There will also be flight/vehicle types of shooting and even levels where you are flying in all directions and shooting the enemies that come from every direction like an omni or vert shooter.
I enjoy the graphics a lot. They are Saturday morning cartoony and have lots of humor. When you combine that with the great variety of moves and diff types of gameplay, Bucky O'Hare is a game that'll keep your interest long beyond how it first looks.
